Klaviyo Shopify Integration: Setup That Works

What a Klaviyo Shopify integration actually does

A Klaviyo Shopify integration connects your store data directly to Klaviyo, so you can send email and SMS based on real behavior in your shop. Once the integration is active, orders, customers, products and browsing events sync automatically, and most events update within moments. That means a customer who just added an item to their cart can receive a relevant reminder, and your segments always reflect the latest purchase behavior.

This is the difference between generic newsletter blasts and targeted marketing automation. Instead of sending the same email to your entire list, you can build flows and segments on actual data points: what a customer has bought, how much they have spent, when they last shopped, and which products they have viewed. That is the foundation for turning email and SMS into a measurable revenue channel rather than a cost.

How to set up the integration step by step

The setup itself is quick. In Klaviyo, go to the Integrations tab, click Explore apps, search for Shopify and select Install. Then you connect your Shopify store and give Klaviyo the permissions it needs to read orders and customer data. Web tracking, meaning the tracking of onsite behavior, is enabled as part of the setup, so Klaviyo can register product views and cart events.

Two details often cause errors. First, make sure you are logged into the correct Klaviyo account before you start, otherwise Shopify may try to create a new account instead of using the one you already pay for. Second, check that your existing newsletter subscribers sync to the right list in Klaviyo, so you do not lose consent or create duplicate contacts. We always recommend verifying the data sync during a test period before the first flows go live.

If you get a notification that the integration has been disconnected, it is usually caused by expired permissions or a change in app access. The fix is normally to reinstall and reauthorize the connection, but it is worth investigating the cause so it does not happen again and quietly drain your data.

Data sync: from Shopify to usable segmentation

Once the Shopify Klaviyo integration is in place, the real value lies in turning the synced data into segments. Klaviyo pulls in both historical order data and ongoing events, so you can build segments like first-time buyers, customers with high lifetime value, or people who have not shopped in 90 days. These segments update themselves as customer behavior changes.

At Mercive, we typically build segmentation around a specific commercial goal rather than copying a standard template. A brand with high-frequency repeat purchases should be segmented differently from a brand with few, expensive purchases. The right underlying data model determines how precise your flows and campaigns can be, and this is where a well-considered setup pays for itself.

Klaviyo or Shopify's own emails?

Shopify has built-in email, and for very simple sends it is fine. But Klaviyo is built for marketing automation in a different class entirely: advanced segmentation, ready-made flows for cart abandonment and post-purchase, A/B testing and SMS in the same platform. For brands that want to drive serious revenue through owned channels, Klaviyo is the natural choice precisely because of its deep data access.

Klaviyo is free to install and use up to a certain number of contacts and sends, after which the price follows the size of your list and your usage. For most growth brands it is an investment that quickly pays off, because automated flows run in the background and generate revenue without manual work. That is the difference between a newsletter and an actual income channel.

How Mercive would approach it

We never start with flows. We start with the data foundation: verifying that the integration syncs correctly, that consent is handled properly, and that the events we want to build on are actually being registered. Only then do we build.
