pensopay Shopify: A Complete Guide to Integration and Payment Solutions

At Mercive, we help webshops choose and implement the right payment solution. In this article, we dive into Pensopay as a payment provider for Shopify – focusing on functionality, integration, pricing structure, and alternatives.

What is Pensopay?

Pensopay is a Danish payment provider that offers a combined solution consisting of a payment gateway and a merchant agreement. They support a wide range of e-commerce platforms, including Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento, and particularly cater to Danish and Nordic webshops.

What payment options does pensopay offer?

pensopay offers a wide range of payment methods:

  • Visa and Mastercard
  • Dankort
  • MobilePay
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Anyday and ViaBill
  • Vipps
  • iDEAL

These solutions meet the needs of both Danish and international customers and can be customized for the webshop based on the market and target audience.

How do you integrate Pensopay into Shopify?

It is relatively easy to integrate Pensopay into your Shopify store:

  1. Create an account with pensopay
  2. Install the Pensopay app via the Shopify App Store.
  3. Add API keys and configure settings in Shopify.
  4. Test the payment flow to ensure that it works correctly.

Additionally, Pensopay offers integration with services like Shipmondo, allowing you to manage payments and refunds directly in your order management system.

What does Pensopay cost?

Pensopay offers three pricing models:

  • BASIC: No fixed monthly fee. Transaction fee: 0.7 EUR + 1.25% (EU cards)
  • START-UP: 9 EUR per month. Transaction fee: 0.2 EUR + 1.25%
  • PRO: 18 EUR per month, including 250 transactions. Thereafter: 0.08 EUR + 1.25%

Supplementary prices for selected methods:

  • MobilePay: Fast monthly price and fee per transaction
  • Anyday and ViaBill: Transaction-based fees
  • Currency adjustment for international cards

It is important to note that Shopify charges an additional fee of 2% of revenue if an external payment solution like pensopay is used instead of Shopify Payments.

When should one choose Pensopay?

Pensopay can be a good choice if:

  • You want Danish support and local payment infrastructure.
  • You need specific methods like MobilePay or iDEAL.
  • You have advanced requirements for flexibility in the gateway and acquirer.

For many online stores, it will be an important consideration that Shopify charges extra fees for using external solutions.

Alternatives to Pensopay

At Mercive, we generally recommend Shopify Payments for most Shopify stores. This is due to:

  • No extra fees for payment processing
  • Easy setup directly in Shopify
  • Automatic support for Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay
  • Possibility to add MobilePay and other methods via Shopify Payments (from 2025)

Using Shopify Payments typically results in lower overall costs because less time is spent on integration challenges – especially for online stores aiming for international growth and for brands that want multiple mobile payment methods in various markets.

What does PensoPay cost?

PensoPay has no setup fee and no lock-in. The prices below are exclusive of acquiring unless otherwise stated, and are taken from PensoPay's own price page, July 2026.

  • BASIS: 0 kr./mo, 4 kr. per transaction + 1.25% acquiring (Visa/Mastercard in the EU/EEA). Cards outside the EU/EEA are settled at 2.75%.
  • START-UP: 49 kr./mo, 1 kr. per transaction + 1.25% acquiring. Recommended at 15-70 transactions per month.
  • PRO: 129 kr./mo including 250 transactions/mo + 1.25% acquiring. After that 0.25 kr. per transaction.
  • ENTERPRISE: individual pricing for revenue above 1,000,000 kr./mo.

On top of this comes MobilePay Online at 49 kr./mo + 1 kr. per transaction, while Apple Pay and Google Pay are free.

PensoPay or Shopify Payments: which pays off best?

The decisive factor in the calculation is that Shopify charges an extra third-party fee per transaction when you do not use Shopify Payments. The fee depends on your Shopify plan and amounts to 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

On Basic and Grow the third-party fee is high enough that Shopify Payments is usually cheapest overall, even when you factor in PensoPay's gateway and acquiring. On Advanced and Plus the extra fee is markedly lower (0.6% and 0.2%), and here the calculation can tip, depending on your transaction volume and your card mix.

Regardless of price, PensoPay has concrete strengths in the form of Danish support and MobilePay Online. That should be part of the assessment alongside the pure fee calculation.

How to get started with PensoPay in Shopify

Setting up PensoPay in Shopify follows a few manageable steps:

  • Create an account with PensoPay and choose the pricing plan that fits your transaction volume.
  • Install the PensoPay app or gateway and add it under Shopify's payment settings.
  • Activate the payment methods you want to offer, for example MobilePay.
  • Run a test payment to make sure the payment flow works correctly before you go live.
