Shopify Flow - Automatiser din webshop og skaler smartere

Shopify Flow helps you automate repetitive tasks in your online store, so you avoid manual errors and free up time for growth. By letting the system handle everything from customer tags and order flows to internal notifications, your operations become more stable, scalable, and less vulnerable to reminders and ad hoc processes. The article provides an overview of how you can use Shopify Flow as a central part of your e-commerce infrastructure.

Shopify Flow i praksis

It can often be seen very quickly when a webshop grows. Order volume increases, and suddenly someone is tagging customers manually, checking stock status without fixed criteria, and sending internal reminders in Slack because the process is not defined. This is not scalable operation. It is firefighting, which typically ends with errors, wasted time, and inconsistent customer experiences.

Shopify Flow is Shopify's tool for automating repetitive tasks in your Shopify store. The purpose is to make operations more consistent, so the team can spend time on what drives the business, instead of repeating the same clicks and checks every week.

Hvad er Shopify Flow?

Shopify Flow is a workflow tool where you build automations based on simple logic. When something happens, the system performs an action, and if a criterion is met, something else can happen. It can be used for everything from order and customer management to internal notifications and updates in Shopify.

Triggers, betingelser og handlinger

Most flows are built from three basic elements. When you understand them, you can both assess what is worth automating and how to avoid a flow becoming too complex.

  • Trigger: An event that starts a flow, for example, when an order is created or when a customer is created.
  • Conditions: Rules that sort and qualify, for example that the order value is above a certain amount, or that the order contains a specific product.
  • Actions: What happens afterwards, for example adding a customer tag, updating a field, sending an internal notification, or starting a task in another system.

The goal is rarely to build many flows. The goal is to build the right flows so that the webshop behaves consistently, even when you are not looking at it every hour.

Shopify automation that makes a difference

If the operation is based on to-do lists, it is also based on mistakes. Shopify automation is about getting the most important routines into a system that doesn't get tired, distracted, or sick. This makes the results more stable, and it makes handovers within the team easier.

Typiske workflows i en Shopify webshop

A good place to start is the flows that save time every day and reduce the risk of human error. Here are some typical examples that can often be implemented quickly and have a clear effect.

  • Automatic tagging of customers based on purchases, for example VIP, B2B, or repeat purchases.
  • Internal notifications for special order types, for example high order value, express shipping, or orders with specific products.
  • Automatic updates of product status, for example when the inventory reaches a minimum or when a product needs to be marked as temporarily out of stock.

When we work with platform activation, we often use Shopify Flow as one of the quickest ways to get more out of Shopify without changing the entire tech stack. You can read more about the approach in our

platformaktivering.

Shopify Flow og Shopify Plus

Shopify Flow is often mentioned alongside Shopify Plus because the need for automation typically grows when there are more markets, a larger assortment, more integrations, and more people involved in the operations. The benefits become clearer when there is more to keep track of and more places where manual processes can create friction.

This does not mean that Shopify Flow is only relevant on Plus. It means that Flow, in many cases, becomes one of the tools that makes it realistic to scale without expanding the team slowly at the same pace as complexity.

If you are unsure about the direction, you can start by getting an overview of our

services, and assess whether the task involves a couple of targeted flows, a larger platform cleanup, or a combination.

Shopify Flow office: When does it make sense to get help?

You don't need an agency to create a simple flow. You typically need help when automation goes from being an efficient shortcut to being a business-critical infrastructure. Here are two typical situations where it makes sense to have a sparring partner.

  1. You will ensure consistent processes across the team, so everyone works from the same logic, regardless of who is on duty.
  2. You have integrations or custom logic where standard setups are not enough, and where errors can cost money, time, or customer trust.

At Mercive, we exclusively work with Shopify and Shopify Plus, and we are a Shopify expert certified agency. If you want to see how we approach e-commerce in practice, you can dive into our

cases. The goal is not to find the same solution, but to see the level, the method, and the type of issues we typically solve.

Shopify integrationer og custom flows

Some flows stop at tagging and notifications. Others need to work together with the rest of your business. This is where Shopify Flow becomes particularly interesting, as it can be connected to apps and in many setups function as a robust control point between Shopify and the rest of your system landscape.

When standard actions are not enough, it may be necessary to adjust the setup or build an integration that fits your processes. It is a natural part of our approach to

webudvikling, where Flow is often part of a larger setup that prioritizes operational reliability, documentation, and clear areas of responsibility.

A simple rule for automation

If a person clicks the same thing more than a few times a week, they are a prime candidate for Shopify Flow. Not because everything should be automated, but because manual routines rarely improve when repeated. They just become more expensive as volume increases.
