Shopify Markets Guide: Everything You Need to Know (2023)

Shopify Markets allows brands to create customized online shopping experiences for different target audiences. This is done through a centralized admin dashboard, where you can add markets that specifically target countries or regions, or you can group countries and regions together to simplify your internationalization efforts.

Functionalities in Shopify Markets

Shopify Markets is available to all Shopify customers regardless of their subscription. Below you will find some of the key features:

International Domains

If you want to attract customers from around the world, you need to tailor your webshop's shopping experience to their wants and needs. By using international domains, you can offer a local shopping experience that appeals to customers in different countries and regions.

With Shopify Markets, you can use custom domains for specific countries or regions, allowing you to create a local version of your webshop in the language and currency that is most relevant. According to a study by Shopify, 75% of respondents will only buy from their native language, and 65% of them are hesitant or will not purchase from a solely English-language webshop at all.

In addition to the above, it also provides the opportunity for:

  • Local product feeds for other channels:By using third-party apps from the App Store, you can easily create and distribute local product feeds through Google, Meta, and other channels.
  • Regional recommendations:Every opportunity should be used to offer potential customers what is relevant and what they are looking for. By using their country and language based on their geographical location, we can direct them to a local shopping experience.

Shopify Markets supports most domain types including top-level domains, subdomains, and subfolders – which your webshop needs to expand globally.

Local currencies and pricing

With Shopify Markets, you can also customize your selection at a country/region level based on your inventory. This is an important feature for offering the right products to the right markets while keeping shipping costs down and ensuring fast delivery.

  • Webshop content per market:Tailor the content on your webshop to match the expression that is relevant for each market.
  • Language translation:Translate your webshop into multiple languages and set it as default for each market.

Checkout localization

Improvements in the checkout process have a significant impact on your conversion rate, and like in all other respects, it’s about personalizing the experience, making it relevant and easy for customers, as visitors are more likely to make a purchase from a webshop that makes the experience clear and simple.

  • Local payment methods:Your customers can check out with their preferred payment solution, as well as Shop Pay, MobilePay, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay (requires Shopify Payments). This way, they can choose the solution that is easiest and makes the most sense for them.
  • Local address formats:Eliminate the hassle for foreign customers by automatically localizing the address format with Google Autocomplete.
  • Estimated duties and import taxes:Show customers exactly what they need to pay in taxes and fees based on their location at checkout. This way, your products can be delivered to customers without issues from shipping companies.

Duties, shipping, and taxes

Shopify Markets provides an estimate of all duties and taxes associated with a purchase at checkout, giving customers transparency regarding all costs related to their purchase.

The most popular local payment solutions are also supported, and if activated, they will automatically help improve the checkout conversion rate and minimize the likelihood of people abandoning their carts.

As explained by Shopify:"For brands that have global change with dispersed teams managed in local markets, they often prefer to sell across markets with expansion stores, which allow them to sell and be paid in different currencies that align with their international sales strategy."

Shopify Markets vs multiple stores

In some cases, it makes more sense to have several separate stores (expansion stores) than to have a single store with Shopify Markets. It largely depends on the flexibility you are looking for, as well as the resources you have available to manage multiple expansion stores.

There are several clear situations where you should use expansion stores instead of Shopify Markets:

  • Limited product range based on geography:At this time, it is not possible to restrict products or collections to a specific group of customers (based on geography or tags) other than using inventory to store products that are sold out. However, this is set to change soon, as it appears that Shopify is working on developing this functionality.
  • Region/Country specific campaigns:If you run different campaigns across your stores where you want to change entire pages, you need the option and flexibility to make those changes in Shopify Customizer, which Shopify Markets currently does not have an out-of-the-box solution for.
