At Mercive, we work daily with Shopify and advise both new and established businesses on how to best leverage the platform's potential. If you are considering starting a webshop or migrating from an existing solution, it is important to understand what Shopify is – and why it is currently the strongest e-commerce platform on the market.
What is Shopify, specifically?
Shopify is a cloud-based e-commerce platform that allows you to build and run an online store without the need for technical expertise. You pay a fixed monthly subscription and gain access to everything you need: online store, CMS, inventory management, payment solutions, SEO tools, marketing, and much more.
Wherever former open source solutions like WooCommerce or Magento are chosen, we see a clear shift in the market: companies no longer want to maintain technical systems, but would rather focus on growth. Here, Shopify is an obvious choice.
Shopify in Denmark – does it work?
Yes, and it works really well. Shopify supports:
- Danish payment solutions like MobilePay and Dankort
- DKK as the standard currency
- Danish VAT rules
- Integration with Danish shipping providers such as GLS, PostNord, Shipmondo, and Webshipper
- Translation of both frontend and checkout to Danish
Today, we have helped more than 50 Danish companies transition to Shopify – from start-ups to brands with nine-figure revenues.
Shopify for different types of businesses
Startups and small businesses
Smaller businesses often choose Shopify because it's easy and quick to get started. You don't need technical experience, and the platform allows you to launch a beautiful and functional online store in just a few days.
Example: A newly started business can launch with the Basic plan, use a free theme, connect MobilePay – and then they are off and running.
Medium-sized brands
When the webshop starts to grow, you can upgrade to the Shopify plan, add advanced reports, and use integrations like Klaviyo, Meta Ads, and Google Shopping.
Example: Planet Nusa and Bareen have had great success scaling through Shopify – with high growth and strong community building.
Larger companies and enterprises
Shopify Plus and Shopify Components enable enterprise brands to build flexible headless solutions with APIs, modular checkout, custom backend integration layers, and multi-store setups.
Example: 66North and Les Deux are examples of strong Nordic brands that have grown on Shopify. Internationally, we find brands like Gymshark, Allbirds, Skims (Kim Kardashian), and Glossier – all with hundreds of millions in annual revenue.
Shopify webshop: What can you build?
With Shopify, you can:
- Build a visually strong webshop with a professional theme.
- Manage products with variants, stock status, and SEO tags.
- Create landing pages, product series, and campaign pages.
- Connect your store directly to social media and marketplaces.
- Add advanced features through apps – e.g., live chat, return portals, reviews, and subscription models.
Imagine a marketing department that can easily create campaign pages without needing to involve a developer. That's exactly what is possible in Shopify.
Shopify prices and subscriptions
Shopify offers four tiers:
- BasicApproximately 190 DKK/month – for newly started webshops
- Shopify (Grow)Approximately 500 DKK/month – for growing stores with multiple users
- AdvancedApproximately 2,200 DKK/month – with advanced reporting and full functionality
- Shopify Plus: From approx. 15,000 DKK/month – for enterprises and brands with an international setup
All plans include:
- Unlimited number of products
- SSL security
- Hosting and CDN (fast loading globally)
- Support and access to the Shopify App Store
Shopify Payments and fees
When you use Shopify Payments, you avoid external gateways – everything is integrated and gathered in one place.
Fees:
- Basic: 2.9% + 0.30 USD
- Shopify: 2.6% + $0.30
- Advanced: 2.4% + 0.30 USD
If you use an external gateway like Quickpay or Nets, you will pay both a transaction fee to them and an additional fee to Shopify.
At Mercive, we always recommend Shopify Payments, as it results in fewer system errors, faster payouts, and lower overall costs.
Shopify support and assistance
Shopify offers:
- 24/7 support via chat and phone
- Large online help center
- Community with thousands of users
- Access to verified Shopify Experts (like us)
At Mercive, we often act as a sparring partner on everything from design and strategy to ongoing optimization and growth. We know both the platform and the most effective tools.
Why do we recommend Shopify over everything else?
There are other platforms – but Shopify wins on all the important parameters:
- You own your store and your data.
- It is lightning fast and stable (99.99% uptime)
- You can grow from a single store to an international enterprise – without changing platforms.
- Shopify is future-proofed with an API-first approach, headless support, AI features, and a modular structure.
Many businesses choose Shopify to reduce complexity and instead focus on branding, growth, and customer journeys.
We have migrated businesses from both Magento, WooCommerce, and PrestaShop ourselves – and all have experienced that Shopify is significantly more efficient and scalable.
