Company Accounts and B2B Login on Shopify

How Shopify B2B login works

A well functioning Shopify B2B login is the foundation of any wholesale business on Shopify. Unlike a standard consumer store, where everyone sees the same prices, B2B selling requires that only approved business customers gain access to their specific prices, catalogs and payment terms. Shopify solves this through company accounts and the new customer accounts, where login controls exactly what each buyer can see.

Once a B2B customer is set up in your store, the person logs in with an email and a six digit one time code instead of a fixed password. After login, Shopify matches the customer with the correct company and location and automatically shows the B2B products and wholesale prices that belong to that specific business. This means unauthorized visitors never gain access to your business prices, and every buyer meets a catalog tailored to their agreement.

Company accounts: companies, locations and users

At the heart of Shopify's B2B features is the company object. A company can have multiple locations, for example a head office and several stores or departments, and each location can have its own payment terms, delivery addresses and price lists. To each company you connect one or more users, meaning the people at the customer who actually log in and place orders.

This structure is what makes B2B login on Shopify more than simple access control. You can ensure that a buyer at location A only sees prices and products for location A, while a central purchasing manager has access across all of them. For larger customers you can offer a self service portal flow, where the customer's own administrator adds and removes users and assigns roles, so you avoid manual user administration every time there is a change in the purchasing department.

Does B2B login require Shopify Plus?

The native B2B features, including company accounts and the associated login with customer accounts, are part of Shopify Plus. If you want to sell business to business with proper access management, company specific prices and payment terms directly in the platform, Plus is the right framework. It gives you one store that can handle both B2B and B2C without separate systems.

It is possible to build a simple form of wholesale selling without Plus using third party apps that lock prices or catalogs behind a customer login. But those solutions are typically more fragile and require more maintenance, because they are not part of Shopify's core. For serious brands with multiple business customers, we at Mercive recommend the native path on Plus, where login, prices and user administration work together from the start.

Mercive's approach to a secure B2B login

When we build B2B login on Shopify for a brand, we start with the data model: what do the customers' companies, locations and purchasing roles look like in reality? A retail chain with 40 stores has different needs than a manufacturer with ten large wholesalers. We map the flow before we touch the theme, so login and catalog display reflect the actual purchasing process.

Next, we tailor the storefront and the login experience so B2B customers meet a professional flow without consumer noise such as campaign banners and shipping messages that make no sense in a wholesale context. Where the standard features fall short, for example with advanced role based access, approval flows or integration to the customer's ERP, we build it with a custom app. That way you get a login that is both secure and scales with the business.

Getting off to a good start

A strong B2B login is not an isolated feature, but an interplay between customer accounts, price lists, catalogs and your storefront. Start by defining who should be able to log in and what they should see, and build from there. The more precisely you model your companies and locations, the less support and manual work you will have afterward.

Whether you are launching wholesale or tightening up an existing B2B solution, we help with the entire setup, from company accounts and login to prices and custom functionality.
